Heather pointing to my slipstitched opening of my McCall's 5760 jacket from nearly three years ago. (I still wear it...)
Thank you for your responses to the original post! I appreciate your assurances that I do not have to apologize for investing my time and efforts into my sewing projects and reviews. Acknowledgement and appreciation of our work as helpful and/or informative makes it all worth the while.
I just discovered you had a blog (and added it to my list of blogs to read)even though I have always enjoyed your reviews on PR.
ReplyDeleteI always read blogs in Google Reader so rarely read comments left by others, so I am astonished by what you are saying you have been reading.
Your garments are lovely. Don't be put off or discouraged by comments from people that don't appreciate that you take the time and effort to post your garments online.
I have to go catch up on the rest of your blog now. :)

I am not an expert either. Sewing and blogging are fun for me. One of my favorite things is seeing other people's mistakes because I learn from them. Some of the most positive feedback I get is from my own silly mistakes! I like your blog and love your projects!
ReplyDeleteHeather- I appreciate your candor. I usually don't comment ("lurker"), but feel like I need to. Don't let these sewing "snobs" get to you. I think I may have found one of the blog posts that you are talking about. What nerve! Abrasive and abusive. I got turned off by such attitude. It makes me not want to "learn" from her.
ReplyDeleteI hope your tongue is temporarily in your cheek, and that you're not being serious. Apologize for what - being yourself?
ReplyDeleteSure, some bloggers are on a different level than us. Their sewing may be better than ours, but if they want to think "they" are better than us, they can keep their opinions, thank-you-very-much.
Heather, thanks for your kind comment on my blog. Please, please don't let yourself be discouraged by what you read in other people's blogs and above all don't apologize. Your journey is your own and it is what matters. Nobody is forced to read what they don't want. The followers you have must be finding something of value in your blog or they would spend their time somewhere else. A few months ago I read something in a magazine that rings so true that I have to share it with you: "Go where the love is." The article gave it as advice on job seeking, but I think it applies in all areas of our lives. So, go where the love is, and thanks for sharing your sewing adventures with us!
ReplyDeleteI love your blog. I love that you have a great sense of adventure and that is what keeps me coming back. I don't always comment but I do visit often. The "sewing elite" doesn't hold my interest. keep doing "you" and enjoy the art of sewing.
ReplyDeleteThank you ladies, for your very encouraging comments. Maybe I had one of those very rare "bluesy" moments. It sure does not help to read and internalize some negative blog posts. I would rather sew instead! Mary, BTW, my tongue stays in my mouth...
ReplyDeleteSurrounding myself with positivity works, and I am fortunate to meet upbeat ladies as yourselves. Now that I am back to my normal happy self, I'll make a cup of mint hot chocolate (purchased a tin at the small yesterday)and make a toast to honor such beautiful ladies that I see here. Thank you!
Oops, I meant "mall", not "small".
ReplyDeleteHeather - this is why I love your blog - I love the prints you choose ( I am definitely a prints persons ) and I love the your play with words as well.I love your fun sense of style. Please don`t apologize for who you are .
ReplyDeleteHeather,
ReplyDeleteI think I've read the same blog you are referring to. It's been on my mind for several days now.
Here is what I think: If the end product looks good and fits good and holds up to everyday wear for a long time, then what does it matter if the techniques we use are not "couture approved"?
You have made very nice looking garments and many times inspired me to also sew a blouse/shirt I spotted on your site, b/c it looked good on you.
So I thank you very much!
Luckily, I have no idea what you're talking about but am glad you are not letting it get you down. Sewing is our hobby! It is for fun! There are no sewing police going to come break down our doors for doing something "wrong." Just keep enjoying yourself and you win.
ReplyDeleteWell, I for one am glad to be a follower of yours! I think you do wonderful work! And all that REALLY matters is that YOU enjoy sewing and the thing you create! ;) I say pffft to the elite!
ReplyDeleteI'm not one of the 'elite' either, and proud of it! As others have said, we sew for fun, not to spend hours stressing over couture methods. That is too much like work! I love your projects, and that you make things that we would all wear in our everyday lives. I guess what I'm trying to say is that you are 'real', and are the type of person who I could relax and have tea with, and laugh at our sewing triumphs and mistakes. Not like some other bloggers who seem to hold themselves above the rest of us. Keep sewing and have fun!
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting everything you do ... it is really encouraging as you are not one of the elite, nor do you profess to be (I think I read the posting you refer to) ... you are a beautiful inspiring person!
Thanks for allowing anonymous responses (I've noticed others who have stopped because of unkind personal attacks).
Appreciating your sewing related postings with best wishes,
Lynda from Toronto aka 'persevering'
I'm sorry you felt that way reading other blogs... I wonder if the posts you read were meant to have that effect? With a few notable exceptions, I've found the online sewing community to be full of people who are quick to share their knowledge and inspiration... And support.
ReplyDeleteThe things you apologized for don't need any apologies! :) Thanks for leaving me a comment, that meant I found your vibrant work. :)
You have no need to apologise to anyone. Make what you want, how you want that's why we sew isn't it? Ignore the haters :-))
ReplyDeleteI love your garments and have learnt from you. It is all a learning process and you should be proud of the great job that you do. I love reading your blog.
